Why people look for an alternative

remove.bg does the job better than almost anything else. The friction is the meter: it runs on credits, the plans start at US$8.10 a month for 40 of them, and max-quality export is a paid-plan feature. For a designer processing product shots daily that is straightforward value. For someone cutting out one photo for a presentation, it is a signup and a purchase.

Running the model on your own machine instead

Toolerax’s Background Remover does not send your photo anywhere. It downloads an ONNX segmentation model into the browser and runs it locally — through WebGPU where your browser supports it, WebAssembly otherwise.

That changes the economics completely. The compute is yours, so there is nothing for us to bill: no credits, no resolution paywall, no watermark, no account. It also means the photo is never uploaded, which matters more than it sounds for the things people actually cut out — faces, children, ID photos, unreleased product shots.

The honest cost is the first run. The model is a few tens of megabytes and has to download once before anything happens; on a slow connection that is a real wait. After that it is cached and subsequent images are quick.

Where remove.bg is the better choice

This is the one comparison on the site where the paid product is clearly better at the core task, and pretending otherwise would waste your time:

• Hair, fur and fine edges. Their model is trained and tuned specifically for this and it shows. If you are cutting out a portrait with flyaway hair against a busy background, they will beat us.

• Consistency at commercial scale. If cut-outs are your business — an online shop with thousands of product photos — a paid service with predictable output is the right tool and the credits are a rounding error.

Getting a better cut-out

Whichever tool you use, the input decides most of the result. Even lighting, a subject that contrasts with the background, and no motion blur do more for the edges than any setting. If the background is busy, crop tighter first — less background means less for the model to get wrong.
