Free online data storage converter

This data storage converter turns any file or drive size into every other unit at once — from bits and bytes up to petabytes. Switch between decimal and binary units to match whatever you are working with, whether that is a hard-drive spec sheet or your operating system.

Decimal vs. binary — the source of confusion

The reason a “1 TB” drive shows as about 931 GB on your computer is that two different standards are in play:

  • Decimal (SI) — KB, MB, GB step by 1,000. Used by storage manufacturers.
  • Binary (IEC) — KiB, MiB, GiB step by 1,024. Used by most operating systems and memory.

Bits vs. bytes

Network speeds are measured in bits per second, while file sizes are in bytes. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB/s. This converter handles both, entirely in your browser, so it is instant, private and works offline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many MB are in a GB?

It depends on the standard. In decimal (SI) units 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary units 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Storage makers use decimal; operating systems often use binary, which is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GiB.

What is the difference between binary (1024) and decimal (1000)?

Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) step by 1,000. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) step by 1,024, matching how memory is addressed. This tool lets you switch between both so you always get the right answer.

How do I convert bits to bytes?

There are 8 bits in 1 byte. Enter a value in bits and read the Byte row, or vice versa. This matters for network speeds, which are quoted in bits per second (e.g. 100 Mbps ≈ 12.5 MB/s).

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Manufacturers advertise in decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes) but Windows reports in binary (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). The bytes are the same; only the unit differs, so a 1 TB drive shows as ~931 GiB.

What units are supported?

Bits and bytes up to petabytes: bit, Byte, KB/KiB, MB/MiB, GB/GiB, TB/TiB and PB/PiB, in both decimal and binary modes.

Is it private?

Yes. All conversions run in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool works offline.
