How to Convert PPT to PPTX

You have inherited a .ppt — the training deck nobody has touched since 2005, a conference talk pulled off an old drive, a template a colleague swears is still the official one. And now PowerPoint blocks it, Google Slides mangles it, or the upload form only takes .pptx.

Converting it to the modern format takes seconds and clears all of that up.

PPT vs PPTX, briefly

.ppt is the binary format PowerPoint used through 2003 — one opaque blob that really only PowerPoint understood. .pptx, from PowerPoint 2007 onwards, is a zip of XML files: open, documented, and readable by every presentation app there is.

What that buys you:

  • It opens everywhere. Google Slides, Keynote, LibreOffice, phone apps, browser previewers. Support for the old binary format is thinning out year by year.
  • Much smaller files. XML plus zip compression regularly halves the size of an old deck, or better.
  • It stops getting blocked. XLSX and PPTX cannot carry VBA macros, which is why modern Office treats them as safe and treats the old binary formats with suspicion.
  • Recoverable. Because it is really a zip file, a damaged PPTX can often be partially rescued. A damaged PPT is generally just gone.

Why PowerPoint may be refusing to open it

If you get a message about the file type being blocked by your security settings, or blocked because it came from the internet, nothing is wrong with your copy of Office. Microsoft restricted legacy binary formats by default because they were a common malware carrier. Converting the file sidesteps the policy permanently, which is faster than editing Trust Center settings every time one of these appears.

What survives, and what to check before you present

Slides, text, layouts, images, slide order and speaker notes come across dependably. A twenty-year-old deck is a different beast from a spreadsheet, though — presentations are full of visual detail, and some of it is worth a glance:

  • Fonts.The single most common cause of a deck “looking wrong.” If the original used a font that is not installed where you open it, the nearest match is substituted and text reflows — headings wrap onto two lines, bullets drift off the slide. Flick through in slide sorter view and you will spot it immediately.
  • Animations and transitions. Basic ones survive. Elaborate 2003-era custom animation sequences may simplify or disappear. If your talk depends on a build revealing one bullet at a time, rehearse it once.
  • Embedded video and audio. The weakest link. Old decks often reference media files by path rather than embedding them, or use codecs nothing plays any more. Test every media slide.
  • Embedded Excel objects and charts. Usually render fine as visuals, but may no longer be live-editable in place.
  • WordArt and old 3D effects. These were reimplemented entirely in 2007. Expect the general look, not a pixel match.
  • Macros. PPTX cannot store VBA at all. Any code in the old deck is dropped — deliberately, by the format. If you genuinely need it, save as .pptm from PowerPoint or LibreOffice instead.

None of these are quirks of this converter — they are what happens whenever a two-decade-old presentation meets modern software, including PowerPoint’s own Save As.

If you only need to read or share it

Converting to PPTX is right when you want to edit or present the deck. If you just need to circulate it, converting to PDF is often the better move — it looks identical on every device, cannot reflow, and nobody needs presentation software to open it. Convert to PPTX first, then run PowerPoint to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Will my slides look the same? Layout, text and images transfer faithfully. Fonts that are not installed get substituted, which is the usual reason a converted deck looks slightly off — check that first.

Do speaker notes come across? Yes.

Can I do this in PowerPoint instead?Yes — File › Save As › PowerPoint Presentation. If you have PowerPoint and it will open the file, that is the most faithful route. This tool is for when you do not, or when the file is being blocked.

Why is my PPTX so much smaller? XML plus zip compression, and modern image handling. Nothing was thrown away — check the slide count if you want reassurance.

What about .pps files? That is the old slideshow-only variant. It is not accepted here; rename it to .ppt and try again, or open and re-save it in a presentation app.

Can I convert PPTX back to PPT? Not with this tool. There is very little reason to — the old format is blocked more often than it is required.
