Why Won't My iPhone Photos Open on My PC?

The confusing part is not that iPhone photos fail to open on Windows. It is that some of them open perfectly and others don't— from the same phone, the same person, sometimes the same afternoon. A photo that arrives on WhatsApp opens fine; the one AirDropped an hour later shows a blank icon. That inconsistency makes it feel like a corrupted file or a broken PC, and it is neither.

The explanation is that iPhones do not always send the format they store. Understanding whenthey convert and when they don't tells you exactly why a given photo failed, and how to stop it happening again.

The one-sentence version

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEICrather than JPG, and Windows cannot decode HEIC without an extra codec — but several sharing routes quietly convert to JPG on the way out, which is why those particular photos work.

Why the same phone sends two different formats

This is the piece almost nobody explains. Whether you receive a HEIC or a JPG depends entirely on how the photo left the phone:

  • WhatsApp, Messenger, most social apps— these re-encode and compress everything to JPG before sending. That is why chat photos always open. It is also why they look softer: you received a shrunken copy, not the original.
  • Email from the Photos app— usually converts to JPG, especially if you pick a smaller size when prompted. Usually fine.
  • AirDrop to a Mac, or a direct USB copy— sends the true original, HEIC and all. Windows chokes.
  • Cloud links (iCloud shared album, Google Drive, Dropbox)— hand over the file untouched. HEIC stays HEIC.
  • “Save to Files” then transferred— original format, so HEIC.

So the pattern is consistent after all: the photos that opened were converted for you somewhere along the way. The ones that failed arrived intact.

How to be sure it really is HEIC

Windows hides file extensions by default, so a photo may just look like a nameless icon. In File Explorer, open the View menu and tick File name extensions. Now check the end of the filename:

  • .heic or .HEIC— confirmed. Capitalisation makes no difference; some transfer routes uppercase it.
  • .heif— the same thing under its generic name. Treat it identically.
  • .jpg but still won't open— then HEIC is not your problem. That is an incomplete download or a genuinely damaged file; ask for it again.

Two things people mistake for this problem

Zero-byte or placeholder files after an iPhone-to-PC USB copy.If iCloud Photos is on with “Optimise iPhone Storage”, the phone keeps only small previews and the full images live in iCloud. Copying then produces files that are HEIC-shaped but empty or tiny. The fix is on the phone, not the PC: download the originals first (Settings → Photos → Download and Keep Originals), wait for it to finish, then copy again.

Live Photos. A Live Photo is an image plus a short video. Transferred whole, you may end up with a .heic next to a .movof the same name and wonder why there are two files. Convert the HEIC and ignore the MOV — it is just the motion clip.

Getting the photos open

You have two workable routes, and which one to pick depends on whether the photos are yours.

If the photos came from someone else (the common case), convert them. Open HEIC to JPG, drop in the whole batch at once, and download ordinary JPGs that open on any Windows version, in any app, on any website — no codec, no install, no Store purchase. Want a lossless copy for editing instead? HEIC to PNG. Need to send several as one document? HEIC to PDF. Putting them on a website? HEIC to WebP gives the smallest files.

If they are your own photos, stop the problem at the source: on the iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible and new photos save as JPG from then on. There is a second setting worth knowing about, which most articles miss: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic makes the phone convert to JPG during a USB transfer. Set both, and neither you nor the people you send photos to will hit this again. Photos already taken remain HEIC and still need converting once.

Will converting lose quality?Converting to JPG costs a small, generally invisible amount, once. Note that the JPG you received over WhatsApp lost considerably more than that — converting the HEIC original yourself actually gives you the better picture.

Can I fix it by renaming .heic to .jpg? No. The extension is a label, not the contents; the file stays HEIC and Windows still cannot read it. It has to be genuinely converted.

Does this affect Android or older Windows too? Older Windows is affected worst, as the Store extensions are not available. Android support varies by version and app. Converting to JPG is the one answer that works everywhere.

Open every photo, not just some of them
