Free sales tax & VAT calculator

This sales tax calculatoradds tax to a price or works backwards to remove it from a total. Enter any rate and it instantly shows the net amount, the tax, and the gross — so whether you're quoting a customer or reconciling a receipt, the numbers are right in front of you.

Add tax or extract it

Use Add tax when you know the pre-tax price and need the total a customer will pay. Use Remove tax when you only have the tax-inclusive total and need the net figure — the calculation freelancers and small businesses reach for at bookkeeping time. Both directions use the correct formulas, so the reverse case divides by (1 + rate) rather than naively subtracting a percentage.

Works for sales tax, VAT and GST

The maths is identical across sales tax, VAT and GST — a flat percentage of the price — so this one tool covers all of them at any rate. It updates live as you type and runs entirely in your browser, so your figures stay private.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. For an 8% tax on $50, that's 50 × 0.08 = $4 tax, for a total of $54. This tool does it instantly and also shows the total.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the tax-inclusive price by (1 + rate). For $54 at 8%, that's 54 ÷ 1.08 = $50 before tax, meaning $4 was tax. Use the 'Remove tax' mode for this reverse calculation.

Does this work for VAT and GST?

Yes. VAT and GST use the same maths as sales tax — a percentage of the price. Just enter your local VAT or GST rate and the calculator handles both adding and extracting it.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net is the price before tax; gross is the price after tax is added. The tax is the difference between them. The calculator labels all three so there's no confusion.

Why extract tax from a gross amount?

Businesses and freelancers often need the pre-tax figure for bookkeeping and returns when they only have the total a customer paid. Reverse calculation gives you that net amount and the tax portion.

Is my data private?

Yes. Every calculation runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded and the tool works offline.
