Convert TIFF to PNG
Converting a TIFF to PNG changes the container, not the quality. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel of the original survives the trip — you are swapping a format that mainly specialist imaging software understands for one that every browser, chat app, document editor and website accepts. Nothing is discarded, which is exactly what makes this the right conversion for some jobs and the wrong one for others.
The one thing to expect: it may not get smaller
This surprises people who assume converting always compresses. PNG cannot discard detail; it can only store the same pixels more cleverly. So the result depends entirely on what the image contains:
- Scanned text, line art, diagrams, screenshots— large areas of flat colour compress extremely well, and the PNG is often far smaller than the TIFF.
- Photographs and detailed scans— nearly every pixel differs from its neighbour, so there is little redundancy to exploit. Expect a modest reduction, and occasionally a PNG slightly larger than an LZW-compressed TIFF.
If your real goal is a small file rather than a faithful one, TIFF to JPGis the conversion you want — it typically turns a 40 MB scan into 1–3 MB, at the cost of some fine detail.
What PNG keeps that JPG cannot
- The alpha channel. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent instead of being flattened onto white. For a logo, a signature or a cut-out product image this is usually the deciding factor.
- Sharp edges. Text and line art come through crisp, with none of the faint grey haloes JPG leaves around hard contrast boundaries.
- 16-bit depth. High-bit-depth greyscale and RGB scans keep their full tonal range, which matters if the image will be edited further.
The two things PNG cannot take from a TIFF are multiple pages (use TIFF to PDF) and CMYK colour, which is converted to RGB for screen use.
Choosing between PNG, JPG and PDF
All three start from the same TIFF, and the right one follows from what the image actually is: PNG for graphics, transparency and anything you will edit again; JPG for photographs where file size is the constraint; PDF for anything with more than one page, or any document you intend to send, print or archive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the PNG be smaller than my TIFF?
Often not by much, and occasionally it is larger. PNG is lossless, so it cannot throw detail away the way JPG does — it only packs the same pixels more efficiently. A photographic scan may shrink very little; a document scan or line art with large flat areas can shrink dramatically. If small size is the goal rather than fidelity, convert to JPG instead.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes, and this is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG. The TIFF's alpha channel is carried across intact, so cut-outs, logos and product shots keep their transparent background instead of being flattened onto white.
What happens to a multi-page TIFF?
A PNG file holds one image, so only the first page is converted. Multi-page scans and faxes should go through TIFF to PDF, which preserves every page in a single document.
Does a 16-bit TIFF stay 16-bit?
PNG does support 16 bits per channel, unlike JPG, so high-bit-depth greyscale and RGB scans keep their full tonal range. CMYK is the exception: PNG has no CMYK mode, so print-workflow files are converted to RGB.
Is it free? Is there a watermark or size limit?
Yes — free, no sign-up, and the PNG is watermark-free. Each TIFF can be up to 100 MB. Note that lossless output means large scans produce large PNGs, so allow for the download size.
