What sends people looking
iLovePDF is not stingy — the free tier is generous enough that most people meet it only occasionally. But it is a metered free tier: their pricing page lists per-tool allowances, and the small ones bite first. Compress PDF and PDF to JPG are listed at 2. If you have a folder of scans to compress, you are done for the day after the second file.
Premium is genuinely cheap at US$4 a month billed annually. The question is simply whether you want another subscription for something you do twice a month.
Why Toolerax has no counter
Because for most of its tools there is nothing to count. 102 of the 169 tools run entirely inside your browser — the PDF is opened by the page, rewritten by WebAssembly on your own processor, and handed back as a download. No server touches it, so a task costs us nothing and there is no reason to cap it.
That covers the everyday PDF work: merging, splitting, rotating, deleting pages, reordering, images to PDF, page numbers and watermarks.
The remaining 67 tools — compression, Office conversions, OCR, HEIC and PSD decoding — need engines a browser does not have, so they run on our server over HTTPS with the file deleted immediately after. Those pages say so on the page, before you upload anything.
Where iLovePDF is the better choice
- You want everything in one subscription. Signing, editing, AI summaries, desktop and mobile apps, an account that remembers your work — that is a coherent product and US$4 a month is fair for it.
- You need to sign or request signatures. We have nothing equivalent.
- You work in bulk with an account. Their premium tier is built for repeated, high-volume processing with history; ours is built for one job at a time.
Where Toolerax is the better choice
- Occasional use. If PDFs are a chore you do a few times a month, no subscription and no counter beats a cheap subscription.
- Documents you should not upload. Client contracts, patient paperwork, anything under an NDA — the browser-side tools keep the file on your machine, which is a policy question, not a preference.
- Everything besides PDF. 27 image tools including a browser-side AI background remover, 21 calculators, 26 developer utilities, and format converters for HEIC, PSD, TIFF, EPS and Apple iWork files.
- Zero friction. No account screen between you and the tool.
Common questions
Is there a catch to it being free? A smaller feature set — no signing, no editor, no apps, no account. There is no paid tier waiting to unlock; the site is funded by page ads.
How do I know a file is not being uploaded? Open DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and run a browser-side tool such as Merge PDF. No request carries your file. Every tool page states which of the two kinds it is.
Is the compression as good? Our Compress PDF uses Ghostscript with selectable quality levels and is server-backed for that reason. Results are comparable for scanned documents; for a heavily image-based file it is worth trying both.
Can I use it on a phone? Yes, in the mobile browser — there is no app to install.
