The thing people actually hit

Smallpdf’s free plan is not a trial that expires — it is a plan with a daily download limit. Their own comparison table lists that limit against nearly every tool in the product: compress, all the convert tools, merge, split, rotate, delete pages, number pages, crop, redact, protect. You can do the work; you get a limited number of results out per day.

That is a reasonable business model, and for anyone editing PDFs weekly the Pro plan is probably worth it. It becomes a problem in one specific situation, which is the one that sends people searching: you have eleven files to merge on a Tuesday afternoon and you do not want a subscription for it.

The structural difference

Smallpdf uploads your document, processes it on their servers and sends the result back. That architecture is what makes their OCR, AI summarising and text editing possible — and it is also why there has to be a meter on it, because every conversion costs them CPU time.

Toolerax splits the problem. 102 of the 169 tools run entirely in your browser using WebAssembly, so merging, splitting, rotating, deleting pages, adding page numbers and watermarking cost us nothing per use — there is nothing to limit. You can verify this rather than take our word for it: open your browser’s Network tab while you merge a PDF and watch for an upload request that never comes.

The other 67 tools genuinely cannot work that way. Rendering a Word document, decoding a HEIC photo or running OCR needs real document engines, so those run on a server we administer, over HTTPS, and the file is deleted the moment the result is returned. Each of those tool pages says so rather than burying it.

Where Smallpdf is the better choice

There are three cases where you should just use Smallpdf, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise:

• You need to sign documents. Smallpdf has a full e-signature product with request-signature flows. Toolerax has nothing comparable.
• You need to edit text inside a PDF. Their editor lets you click into a paragraph and retype it. We can rotate, split, merge, number, watermark and compress — not rewrite the text layer.
• You want apps and an account that syncs. Mobile apps, cloud storage integrations, a document history. All deliberate absences here — there is no account, so there is nothing to sync.

Common questions

Is Toolerax really free, or free-with-an-asterisk? Free. No account, no watermark, no daily cap, no feature held back for a paid tier — there is no paid tier. The site is funded by ads on the pages, not by metering the tools.

Is it safe for confidential documents? For the browser-side tools the file never leaves your device, which is as safe as it gets online. For the server-backed ones the file goes over HTTPS and is deleted straight after — and every one of those pages tells you it is server-backed before you upload.

Do I need to install anything? No. Everything runs in the browser you already have, on desktop or phone.

What is the catch? A smaller feature set than a paid product: no e-signatures, no visual text editing, no mobile apps, no account. If none of those matter for the job in front of you, there is nothing else to trade away.
