Extract text from an image with OCR

This free online OCR tool reads the text inside an image and gives it back to you as editable text. Upload a screenshot, scan or photo and the Tesseract OCR engine on our server recognises the words. You get a downloadable text file to copy and reuse.

When to use it

  • Copy text from a screenshot or photo you can't select.
  • Digitise a scanned document or receipt.
  • Pull a quote or address out of an image.

Private & secure

Reading text out of an image is done with the Tesseract OCR engine on our server. Your picture is sent encrypted into a private workspace and deleted the moment the recognised text is returned — the image is never stored or read by anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which languages are supported?

English works out of the box. Enter a language code such as eng, or combine languages like eng+ben, provided that language pack is installed on the server.

How accurate is the OCR?

Accuracy is best on clear, high-contrast, straight images. Blurry, skewed or low-resolution photos reduce accuracy.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Yes. Optical character recognition runs through Tesseract on our server, not in the browser, so the image is uploaded briefly. It is processed in an isolated workspace and erased as soon as the extracted text comes back.

Is it free? Is there a watermark or size limit?

Yes — free with no sign-up and no limits. Images up to 100 MB each can be scanned for text.
